BEHIND PRODUCTION
Mi Finquita, meaning “My Little Farm” in Spanish, is the personal coffee project of Ratibor Hartmann and his wife, Tessie, in the highlands of Chiriquí, Panama. Ratibor belongs to the renowned Hartmann coffee family, whose agricultural heritage in Panama stretches back more than a century. Drawing on generations of experience, the couple established Mi Finquita to explore the potential of carefully cultivated Arabica varieties and distinctive processing techniques. Rather than focusing on large-scale production, the project places particular emphasis on quality, meticulous post-harvest handling and the development of expressive specialty coffee lots.

This Caturra undergoes Natural processing, with whole coffee cherries placed on raised drying beds and regularly turned to encourage even drying. When weather conditions require it, mechanical drying may also be used to complete the process. The result, according to KUDU’s sensory evaluation, is a richly textured coffee that combines vibrant fruit characteristics with chocolate sweetness and a lingering winey finish.
LOCATION
Mi Finquita is located in Los Pozos, in Panama’s Chiriquí Province, at elevations ranging from 1,650 to 2,000 metres above sea level. The estate benefits from an extraordinary natural environment, influenced by the nearby Barú Volcano and the Central American mountain range. Volcanic soils, geothermal activity and mineral-rich landscapes contribute to the area’s distinctive agricultural conditions. Its geographical position also exposes the region to climatic influences from both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, creating a complex combination of rainfall, humidity and temperature variations.

These highland conditions offer an exceptional environment for specialty coffee cultivation, where slower cherry maturation and careful agricultural management can contribute to complex flavour development. For Mi Finquita, this unique combination of volcanic terroir, altitude and the Hartmann family’s experience forms the foundation of its distinctive character.

Mi Finquita reached KUDU through Panama Varietals / Goldkind Coffee, the Austrian specialty coffee company founded by Uschi Zimmermann. With a strong focus on sourcing exceptional Panamanian microlots, Uschi has developed longstanding relationships with producers, including the Hartmann family, connecting carefully selected coffees from Panama with specialty roasters across Europe.

CATURRA: A CLASSIC VARIETY WITH A DISTINCTIVE PANAMANIAN EXPRESSION Caturra is a natural mutation of the Bourbon variety, first discovered in Brazil during the early twentieth century. Its compact growth structure and productive characteristics eventually helped establish it as one of the important Arabica varieties cultivated throughout Central America. Unlike the exceptionally tall traditional Bourbon plants, Caturra’s smaller stature allows for denser cultivation and more manageable harvesting. Despite its agricultural advantages, the variety requires attentive farm management and suitable growing conditions to achieve its full quality potential.

At Mi Finquita, Caturra is cultivated in the high-altitude landscapes of Chiriquí, where volcanic influences and the region’s distinctive climate contribute to the growing environment. Natural processing introduces another dimension to the coffee’s character. By drying the cherries with their fruit intact, this method can encourage pronounced sweetness, rich fruit expression and a fuller mouthfeel when carefully managed. In KUDU’s Mi Finquita, this combination reveals blackcurrant and floral aromas, flavours of red grape, strawberry jam and dark chocolate, and a syrupy, velvety body. The experience concludes with a cacao, winey and lingering finish, highlighting a distinctive expression of Panamanian Caturra.
